Googling further I found this

thread from 2004 complaining of something very similar with G5s. The
description of how it can lock that machine if it happens with MOTU gear is
almost exactly what happend to me on Friday night.

I noticed that driver version 1.4.4 is now out and I've installed that. I
shall do some stress tests to see if I can get this freeze to happen again.

I wonder if there are any interfaces that connect via the express card slot
which will not have the apparently flaky Firewire audio layer in the way.
