It might be interesting to fire up Activity Monitor, play around with the
show, and see how close you're riding the line on CPU activity.

I don't know how AULab calculates its numbers, or what the likely source
of the distortion is, etc., but if it is related to CPU, it's worth
looking at a system-wide number.   Dunno...may be instructive, or may
not...
