DV and Motion JPEG are very similar in their raw CPU requirements however
due to colour space considerations DV may appear to be slower due to
colour space conversions happening as well as iDCT etc. Both are lossy
codecs.
Apple animation is a different beast due to being lossless (at least at 100%
quality).
There are so many facets to video compression that as Chris said there is no
"magic bullet" and you have to balance many factors including but not
limited to:
- Image Quality
- Required colour depth
- Frame accuracy
- Data rate required from disc
- Optimisation level of codec for the CPU
- Availability of hardware/GPU acceleration for codec
