He has contacted me and his problem appears to be the hard drive going  
to sleep.  It's the old "2 seconds of sound and then a dropout"  
problem, which almost always means the hard disk is going to sleep  
because of the energy saver preferences.

Note that you've made a leap here from a vaguely defined "odd issue"  
about audio to assuming it has to do with the audio device.

Be careful about jumping to conclusions.  :)

I would not refuse donated equipment.

As far as I know they only officially recommend one kind of audio card.
