For what it's worth, I did think about this option, and part of me  
likes it better too.  (An elegant solution and all that.)  The thing  
that pushed it over the edge for me in the other direction is that if  
the background to the video is *always* transparent, then just to  
play a movie without the desktop showing through the uncovered area  
requires generating an image and dropping it in, and then  
additionally setting the image to not preserve aspect ratio so that  
IT wouldn't leave part of the desktop showing, etc.  It felt just a  
little too onerous for such a common usage scenario, compared to the  
relatively small complexity hit of adding a checkbox and a color well  
in the inspector.

But I do hear you on that one.
