Say you've got a cue that starts at 0 db.

Then a relative fade brings it up 5 db, for a final value of 5 db.

Then a second relative fade brings it down -25 db, for a final value  
of -20.

Then you restart the first fade, causing its 5 db adjustment to be  
reset.  The volume of the sound at this moment is at -25, and fades  
up to -20.

Then the second fade restarts, causing its -25 db adjustment to be  
reset.  The volume of the sound at this moment is at 5 db, and fades  
down to -20.

Maybe a bit clearer?
