[QLab] QLab Digest, Vol 15, Issue 13

As a new user, let me say thanks to Chris and all the others on this list.
We have recently switched over from PC-land and had our students run two
shows on Q-Lab. It is great for them and we are looking forward to adding
video to the mix.

Personally, I'm a bit challenged by it since this is my first hands-on work
with Macs and I am an old phart with old habits.

In that regard, I wonder if anyone on the list will be at USITT and would be
willing to spend a few minutes with me and my machine to help sort out a few
mysteries?

I will be in residence at the Clark Transfer booth on the Expo floor, so you
can always find me there. At least please stop by to say hello.

Alternatively, our school, with its spanking new studio theatre, is in
downtown Washington, DC. Visitors are welcome at any time. Just call me.

Jonathan

Read the remote question (and checked first to see if covered on
blog)- Is Timbuktu an option for you? I've been running the QLab Mac
in the booth from the floor via MacBook/Airport, and have even logged
in a during a performance and done troubleshooting from home...

I have been meaning to ask the same question. I've been using TB2 for
over 10 years to manage our office network. As long as there is
either a local airport connection or an internet connection, the
target machine can be driven in real time. I don't see any reason why
it can't work for QLab. I have never specifically tested it for
latency, but it always like it is dead-on.

TB2 also makes it really easy to move the entire show build from one
machine to another.

Sorry guys- I don't think I explained myself too well. I meant the IR
remote bundled with the new Intel Macs. For remote plotting, I'm using
a cheap microsoft laptop running VNC to ARD via a cat5 network- seems
to work fine. But in the odd moment that you need to fire off a cue
from (just) outside the control room, the IR remote might be useful...

I believe he's asking about the little IR remote that comes with most
Macs these days. AFAIK, it only works with iTunes and FrontRow. But
check out apps like Sofa Control or mira, you can DL these on
Versiontracker. I haven't monkeyed around with them, but they appear
to allow you to control other apps with the remote.

My only thought about this is that the Apple remote is line-of-sight,
so it might not work too well if the machine you're trying to trigger
is in a booth or something.

I prefer to just create a wireless VNC connection between my lappie
and my Mini which runs QLab.

I have been running QLab and the Studio manager for the 5D without
any problems for a while now but not sending any MIDI commands to the
console. Music from Qlab and console control from SM, each in it's
place in the universe. What hardware is involved in connecting the ,
I presume USB port to the MIDI port on the console? Have you been
using Studio Manager on the same Mac as Qlab simultaneously and if so
have you had any problems sending MIDI while talking to the 5D via
USB as well?

Cheers- I'll check it out & see if it works

Yeah, for most times it wouldn't be ideal, but for where I work, it
would be useful for the operator when doing rig checks, & during
technicals when programming the console.

When I use wireless VNC, the redraw is way too laggy to plot on- what
are you running? or do you go cat5 for plotting, then go wireless to
trigger cues?
Cheers,
Dan

Timbuktu works fine with Qlab. In fact I demoed QLab to some students last
year and used Timbuktu over Skype to show how it was possible to "phone in"
a show, transfer effects from a remote server directly into QLab and stuff
like that. Button pushes are pretty much instant, but the screen update can
get a bit sluggish over a slow network connection.

"Have you been using Studio Manager on the same Mac as Qlab simultaneously
and if so

well?"

I should say that in both instances I was using Gtype (PC) to throw MIDI at
the PM5D and an Akai S6000. This was hooked up with the 5-pin din midi
input on the desk.
The desk's USB port was hooked up to SM on another PC. Having both
communication ports in use did not seem to cause any promlems with the PM5D,

so I would say you are safe to do this on the Mac too.

Never tried using the PM5D USB MIDI and SM at the same time (rather than the

5-pin midi port and USB combo) - but this should not make any difference.

Hello,

i was wondering if anybody is using QLab with
Griffin AirClick USB to trigger the Cue play button?
or is there any other experience with wireless
remote controls?

Thanks for any hint,

Nanni
