I should say that in both instances I was using Gtype (PC) to throw MIDI at 
the PM5D and an Akai S6000.  This was hooked up with the 5-pin din midi 
input on the desk.
The desk's USB port was hooked up to SM on another PC.  Having both 
communication ports in use did not seem to cause any promlems with the PM5D, 
so I would say you are safe to do this on the Mac too.

Never tried using the PM5D USB MIDI and SM at the same time (rather than the 
5-pin midi port and USB combo) - but this should not make any difference.
