Another way to say this is that the computer is "working blind".  It  
can send a signal to the monitor to display a certain shade of white,  
but it doesn't "know" what that monitor is actually showing for that  
signal.  0.1% white on one monitor may produce a different number of  
physical lumens coming out of the display than 0.1% white on another  
monitor.

The only way to make the end result consistent is by giving the  
computer real physical measurements of what is coming out of the  
monitor.  You can either do that with electronic eyes (automated  
calibration), or your own eyes (manual calibration).
