I used a series of fades to do this last year for Wizard of Oz. The
twister was created by firing the sound cue and then fading in the 4
channels in sequence to give the effect of the pan. I played with the
timing to move the storm through the house. By repeating the sound as
it built with a shorter fade-in times, the twister picked up speed
and had the effect of reverb. It let the cow MOOO from L to R across
the stage and Dorothy's voice to zoom around the house.
