I'm reviewing the patch logic now.  I do see one problem: a device  
that is accidentally turned off and then back on in the middle of a  
session may not get re-patched correctly.  Not sure if that accounts  
for the patch into the void, but it might.

I'll get back to you on this as soon as I can.
