Just to clear up a misconception here...  MIDI is plenty fast for these sorts of 
applications.  It's usually the way the equipment has been programmed to deal 
with it that's the biggest problem, as this situation demonstrates.  MIDI is 
many times faster than any incandescent lamp - or even an entire lighting 
system's response time ;-)
