Here's what M-Audio said to do about audio problems with the Firewire
410...

Do you have the AC power adapter connect to the 410? Do you have any
other FireWire devices attached to your system (i.e. FW Hard Drives,
including FW800)?

We have been receiving a few reports of issues with no output from a
small number of customers using the FW410 w/ the latest driver
(1.8.1). There is usually no output after restarting the computer,
and resetting the control panel seems to fix it. This issue is not
easily reproducable. Reverting to the previous driver (1.7.4) has
provide a solution for those customers using this problem. We just
posted a new driver for OS X 10.4.8/10.4.9 (version 1.8.2). Our
testing department has yet to reproduce this issue with the new
driver, so I'd recommend testing that first. You can download this
driver here:

Follow these steps to reinstall the FW410 drivers [Please follow them
exactly]:

1. Repair disk permissions. [Hard drive > Applications > Utilities
Folder > Disk Utility] – Choose Macintosh HD when the utility
launches and click repair disk permissions.
2. Uninstall the FireWire driver using our driver download - Make
sure that the device is disconnected.
3. Repair disk permissions again.
4. Install the latest driver.
5. Repair disk permissions.
6. Shut down, connect the FW410 and restart.

When you reconnect the FW410 you do NOT want to use the AC power
adapter. It will get all the power it needs from the FireWire cable.

Also, check to see if your computer has been updated to OS X 10.4.9.
