I think this is great. It also allows designers to spec a system for a
client or show that can be a little more tailored for their needs. (one
show might really need MIDI, while another might just need 8 more outs).

I would also disagree that software needs to cost a lot of money to be
taken seriously. There is a ton of open source sofware (Apache, MySQL,
*nix, PHP) that is used in high-end applications.  Besides, it's not like
running Qlab will cost a theatre nothing because it is free: you still
have to have a Mac, monitor, and multi-channel sound card (if you want
more than stereo playback).
